NAME: Makoto Tachibana
CANON: Free! Iwatobi Swim Club
CANON POINT: Post Season 2, while apartment hunting for college with Haruka
AGE: 18
BACKGROUND: Here and Here and Basic episode S2 summary here
PERSONALITY:
Caring/Kind: Despite what his size and muscles may tell you, Makoto is very much a gentle giant (he's about six foot tall). He's very well known for his caring and kind demeanor, often to the point on non-confrontation (Haru even comments that he's "too nice"). He also tends to put others' needs before his own, such as when he told no one (save Haru who was already aware of this) of his fear of the ocean when they went out for their training from hell in Season 1. He's also seen as being very good with kids, as shown with his own twin younger siblings and his comfortable and soft demeanor around the children in the Iwatobi Swimming Club at the public pool, filling in as a sub-coach as a way to help his own former coach Sasabe. However, Makoto can be caring to a fault as mentioned below, he nearly drowned while trying to save his friend along with not telling anyone of a particular phobia that he has.
Sensible: Given that the rest of the crew tend to be up to shenanigans whether good or bad, Makoto is seen as the more sensible one of the group. Often, he's shown exasperated by everyone's antics and is always the one to stop Haruka from random jumping into literally pool of water (even a fish tank in the swim store). Of course, he isn't without his own lapses of judgement as shown when he went after Rei in the ocean during a storm without telling anyone, very nearly getting killed in the process. Makoto shows an insightfulness can often be overlooked by his gentle and unassuming demeanor. After all, Rin would not have joined the Samezuka swim club had Makoto not casually let him know they were creating the Iwatobi swim club. Makoto no doubt developed this having to constantly do much the same for Haruka. This is also the reason he's made Captain of the swim team.
Scares Easy: One of Makoto's biggest faults is actually that he scares quite easily. Part of it is often being a bit of a worry wart due to his own size, mostly after going through his own growth spurt he really didn't know what to do with his height but the other reason is largely due to his rather non-confrontational habits. He was scared of a puppy when he was younger, hiding behind Haruka for protection which is a habit still does despite being taller than Haru. He's also scared of haunted places and/or ghosts as seen in the abandoned rest house during the same episode as their training session from hell. Really, a lot of "scary things" get to him noted by the creator as while it's sad that he has that body type but scares easy, it's where the concept of him not knowing how to use his body type to his advantage. However, as mentioned before, Makoto, unfortunately, suffers from one particular phobia despite his love of swimming which is that he’s actually terrified of the water. Backstroke, specifically, allows him to swim and not let his fear get to him. But it’s also the ocean that he fears the most after a fisherman he looked up to died in a tsunami not too far off the coast. However, he’s willing to put that fear aside for his friends, to face his fears, as he did when they decided to try and train in the ocean. He likes making sure that his friends are happy, that they’re having fun.
Passive: The other flaw is that he's "wishy-washy" as Haru described it, he has a passivity to him that allows him to really sort of go with the flow with a lot of things as long as Haru was there. He tends to be dependent on Haru to be honest, doing whatever he can to just swim or be with Haru along with not minding that his "identity" so to speak revolved around his best friend. He didn't really have a sense of self (as again, he just wanted to be around Haruka and it didn't matter where that took them), until around season 2. Once he neared graduation, he started to focus on his own needs and wants that didn't involve Haru in his life. He knew he needed to figure out what he needed to do, possibly leaving Haruka behind in the process. Makoto even raced Haruka in a serious freestyle race, losing to Haru due to his pacing, to figure out if going into pro swimming with Haru was what he wanted and if he could even do it. It wasn’t, in a way. Makoto is not at the levels of Haru and Rin. After helping out at their old swim club that had re-opened, he found he wanted to coach and teach children to swim and love the water, he could empathize with the children, as even some were scared of the water. It allowed him to finally take initiative for himself, to figure out what he wanted to do which was, eventually, to go to Tokyo on his own.
POWERS/ABILITIES: He's an ordinary human, but he is very athletic with a strong swimmer's build meant for backstroke.
INVENTORY: Cell phone, overnight backpack, and casual winter clothes.
